Training of Youth group members on drug abuse
According to the recent statistics, old town is one of the areas that is worst affected by the drug menace, others include, Kisauni, Changamwe and parts of Likoni.
In Old Town Location alone: one in every two households is directly affected and each household in one way or another is indirectly affected be it a relative or a friend.
It is with great fear and concerns that measures have to be taken so as to advocate on better ways to protect the youth from becoming extinct.
Launching this program will go a long way in terms of knowledge sharing and experience by focal persons within our community. The approach that we will use is a friendlier and appealing one: persons within the locality will be empowered with knowledge and skills so as to facilitate the project, such persons will include, youth from within old town, parents, and also recovering addicts who are attached to our programmes.
The group in the target is school population much comprising of young adults and youths with age variation of 15 to 20 years of age. This category is believed to being the most vulnerable as far as drug addiction is concerned most of whom fail to realize in advance the dire consequences of drug involvement.
The program aimed at imparting extensive knowledge and awareness on vices related to drug and substance abuse with a long term result based on the efforts towards drug demand reduction in the so named priority areas through training of Trainers inclusive of teachers, parents, FBO’s and CBO’s on the management of drug related incidents in schools and its environments. Apart from that the students will be involved in different co-curricular activities which include symposiums, school forums, and other sporting events.
The training was spread on two days, the first day was to create knowledge, and understanding as far as drugs is concerned while the second day was to enhance skills on how to establish communication with the contact persons.
We wish to express our sincere appreciations to the efforts done by organizations including, CHDA, Kenya Red Cross Mombasa Branch, MOTYCG, OLD Town CHWs, Al-Muqtadir Association for the Physically Challenged.
